How to Lead Your Family When You Don’t Feel Like a Leader True Man Podcast Episode #249 | Available wherever you listen to podcasts

Most men want to lead their families.

Very few feel equipped to do it.

And that gap, between the man you know you’re supposed to be and the man you feel like on any given Tuesday, is where more men get stuck than anywhere else.

So let’s name the lie that’s keeping you there.

The Lie That Keeps Men Passive

The lie is simple: leadership is a feeling.

That real leaders feel confident, feel ready, feel equipped before they step up. That if you’re uncertain, if you look at your marriage, your kids, your home, and feel the weight of what’s required and aren’t sure you’re up to it, you should wait. Get more together first. Figure it out. Then lead.

That is not how leadership works.

That is not how God has ever called a man.

Joshua didn’t feel ready to lead after Moses died. He was terrified. And God’s response was—get your confidence together first. It was:

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Move. I’ll be with you on the way.

Feelings follow action. Confidence follows commitment. Clarity follows movement.

The man who waits to feel like a leader before he leads will spend his life waiting, and his family will spend their lives with a man who is almost there but never quite present.

What Real Family Leadership Actually Looks Like

Real family leadership does not mean having all the answers. It’s not dominating every decision or running the household like a command center.

Here’s the definition worth living by:

A leader is the person whose presence makes the people around him more of who they’re supposed to be.

Not someone whose presence controls people. Whose presence releases them.

A father whose presence makes his kids more confident, more honest, and more secure. A husband whose presence makes his wife feel known, valued, and free to be who God made her to be.

That kind of leadership is not built on personality. It’s built on character. And character is built one decision at a time, in the ordinary moments of ordinary days.

The 9 Marks of a Restored Man

In this episode, I introduce something I’ve been building for a long time—The Standard of a Restored Man and the 9 Marks of a Restored Man.

Each Mark is anchored not in a man-made code but in the Fruit of the Spirit from Galatians 5:22-23. God’s design for a man, expressed through the lens of masculine leadership.

Here are all nine:

Mark 1 — He Leads with Sacrifice (Love → Sacrificial Leadership) He does not ask what he gets, but what they need. He asks what they need.

Mark 2 — He Stands Firm (Joy → Unshakable Strength) His strength is rooted deeper than how things are going.

Mark 3 — He Brings Calm into Chaos (Peace → Calm Under Pressure) When pressure rises, his presence brings peace — not fear.

Mark 4 — He Controls His Reactions (Patience → Emotional Discipline) He listens. He thinks. Then he responds with intention.

Mark 5 — He Treats People with Strength and Care (Kindness → Intentional Care) His presence makes people better, not smaller.

Mark 6 — He Does What Is Right — Even When No One Sees It (Goodness → Integrity in Action) Who he is in private matches who he is in public.

Mark 7 — He Is a Man Others Can Count On (Faithfulness → Loyalty & Reliability) His consistency builds trust. And trust builds legacy.

Mark 8 — He Operates with Strength Under Control (Gentleness → Strength Under Control) Real strength doesn’t shout. It stands.

Mark 9 — He Masters Himself Daily (Self-Control → Mastery Over Self) If he cannot lead himself, he cannot lead his family.

The Question Worth Sitting With

As you read through those 9 Marks, which one hit hardest?

Not the one you’re best at. The one that landed with the most weight. The one where you felt the most resistance, or the most conviction.

That one is probably where the most important work is waiting.

And here’s the challenge from this episode: pick that one Mark. Just one. And ask yourself—what does living this Mark look like in my home, specifically, this week?

Then do that one thing.

One mark. One week. That’s how it starts.

Something Is Coming

For the man who reads those 9 Marks and feels something stir, something that says I want that standard, I want to walk through that with other serious men, I want you to know that something is coming from the American Family Renaissance.

A structured, twelve-week journey through The Standard of a Restored Man. Built for men who are done drifting and ready to build.

Stay close.
